Similar fracture patterns in window of industrial premises. Wolverhampton,UK. These window panes are made of wired glass (wire mesh is inserted during production),which are holding the glass in place as a result of which the fracture lines can be clearly seen. Fracture patterns in glass are unique, but identifiable features (radial rather than concentric would be an obvious difference) reflect the nature of the glass and the direction of travel and velocity of the breaking object. Radial cracks are caused by a low velocity projectile, while a high velocity one would produce a cone or crater (Hertzian cone). Analysis of glass fractures is an important topic in forensic science | |
