Pima cotton (Gossypium barbadense) flowers and boll (lower right). The boll, which is harvested, consists of cotton fibres that form around the seeds. This artwork is from the four-volume work 'Medicinal Plants' (1880). This classic work on medicinal plants was produced by the British botanists Robert Bentley (1821-1893) and Henry Trimen (1843-1896). The botanical illustrator was David Blair, who like Bentley and Trimen was a Fellow of the Linnean Society (FLS). The binomial name is given at bottom, with 'Linn' identifying the botanist (Carl Linnaeus) who classified this plant | |
