Upsilon Andromedae planetary system. Computer artwork of three extrasolar planets orbiting the star Upsilon Andromedae. This Sun-like star is 54 light years from Earth in the constellation Andromeda. The first planet,Upsilon Andromedae b was found in June 1996. Its presence was inferred by observing the star's wobble as it moved through space, caused by the gravitational pull of the planet. U. Andromedae b has a mass 230 times that of Earth, and orbits its Sun in 4.6 days at a distance of about 8 million kilometres. U. Andromedae c and d were both discovered in April 1999,and orbit in 242 and 1270 days respectively | |
