Cobalt chloride paper in a dessicator. This laboratory apparatus is used to maintain chemicals,or intermediate products in a chemical reaction,in a dry state. In this case, the items being kept dry are pieces of cobalt chloride paper, which are sensitive to humidity and turn from blue to pink if water vapour is present (serving also as a check on whether the dessicator is working). The dessicant (white) in the bottom of the chamber removes water vapour from the air. Holes in the grill allow air to circulate, while the lid seals the chamber, preventing water vapour from entering | |
