Nuclear fusion research. View inside the target chamber at the National Ignition Facility (NIF),at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory,California,USA. This site is attempting to initiate and control hydrogen fusion as a sustainable energy source for future use. The beams from 192 lasers are focused here onto a 2-millimetre-wide capsule of deuterium–tritium (DT) gas. The total energy focused is 1.8 megajoules. The target insertion (lower left) is being observed through the hatches (man at lower right). The first experiments were performed here in 2009,after more than a decade of construction | |
