Nuclear fusion research. Beam path at the National Ignition Facility (NIF),at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory,California,USA. This site is attempting to initiate and control hydrogen fusion as a sustainable energy source for future use. The beams from 192 lasers are focused onto a capsule of deuterium–tritium (DT) gas in a vacuum, producing a total energy of 1.8 megajoules. This side view of Laser Bay 1 shows the four-high laser transport beamline enclosures above the preamplifier support structure. Photographed in 2009,the year the first experiments started here after more than a decade of construction | |
