Common Earthball (Scleroderma citrinum). The fruiting body is hemispherical with a tough outer layer covered in scales. Inside the ball is a purple-brown mass (gleba) bearing basidiospores (heterobasidiomycete). The spores are released when the wall cracks at the apex and there is no puffing mechanism such as with puffballs. It occurs on sandy heaths in July to October and is poisonous | |
