Sugar cane (left) and gum tree (right) plantations. These plantations require a lot of water from irrigation schemes and underground water supplies. Cultivated sugar cane is shredded and crushed to extract the sweet, sugary juices. Further refining is then carried out to produce sugar. Gum trees are cultivated for the gum-like sap they exude when their bark is broken. Photographed in Eshowe,South Africa | |
