| Short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus) calf surfacing next to its mother. Whales and dolphins dive to feed,coming to the surface for air. The short-finned pilot whale,which is found throughout the world's temperate and tropical waters,is actually a large dolphin. When born,a pilot whale weighs around 100 kilograms and feeds on its mother's milk. Later,it feeds on fish,squid and octopus,and can grow to 4 to 6 metres in length and a weight of 1.5 tons.
