Rain gauges, with a splash-proof surround. Rain gauges, also called pluviometers, are used to measure the amount of rain (precipitation) falling at a particular location. The surround prevents splashed water falling into the gauges, which would incorrectly increase the amount collected. The data gathered is used by the Met Office, the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service. Photographed in the UK | |
