Hooke's chimney telescope. This telescope,attached to a chimney,was built by the English scientist Robert Hooke (1635-1703). It was a telescope of 36-foot focus,fixed to the chimney stack and pointing through a hole in the roof at his quarters in Gresham College,London,England. This can be seen at lower centre,along with diagrams of the observation methods and mechanism to remove the cover. This diagram is from a work by Hooke on gravitation and other astronomical matters,titled 'An Attempt to Prove the Motion of the Earth' (1674)
