Sunspot observations. Diagram of equipment being used to safely observe sunspots at Redhill Observatory,Surrey,England. This observatory and home was built from 1852 by the British amateur astronomer Richard Christopher Carrington (1826-1875),who was a Fellow,and later Secretary,of the Royal Astronomical Society. Direct telescopic observation of the Sun is dangerous,so an image of the Sun is projected onto a screen,as shown here (lower left). This diagram is from Carrington's 'Observations of the Spots on the Sun' (1863)
