Sculptor Galaxy (NGC 253). Infrared image showing this spiral galaxy, which is about 12 million light years from Earth, and located in the constellation of Sculptor. It is a starburst galaxy with very vigorous star formation and very dusty spiral arms. When viewed in infrared, the dust clouds become nearly transparent, revealing cool red stars that are otherwise invisible. NGC 253 is around 70-80,000 light years across, and is among the closest galaxies to the Local Group that contains our galaxy. This image was obtained by VISTA (the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy),located at ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile.<br>Restrictions: | |
