Sir Philip Sydney (1554-1586),English poet. Sydney was born into aristocracy at Penshurst Place,Kent. He was educated at Shrewsbury School and Christ Church,Oxford. In 1572 he travelled to France and spent several years touring the continent. Returning to England he became concerned with politics and art. As a poet he was the author of 'Astrophel and Stella' and 'A Defence of Poetry'. As a politician he was a militant Protestant. In 1585 he became governor of Flushing in the Netherlands and conducted raids against the Spanish forces there.
