Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877),US industrialist. Vanderbilt made his money in shipping and trains,and was one of the wealthiest men in history. He was born in Staten Island,New York City,USA. He left school at the age of 11 and started his own ferry company by the age of 16,later expanding into river steamers and the railways. He then expanded further into ocean-going steamships and liners. At the time of his death,he was worth 100 million US dollars.
