Vilhjalmur Stefansson,Canadian explorer
Vilhjalmur Stefansson (1879-1962),Canadian explorer and ethnologist. Stefansson studied anthropology at Harvard University. After archaeological research in Iceland,he took part in the Anglo-American Polar Expedition of 1906-7. He undertook further Arctic exploration from 1908-12,followed by the Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913-1916. All these expeditions explored and surveyed the lands and people of the Arctic regions of Canada and Alaska. This photograph is from the Bain News Service,one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries,with photographs dating from the 1890s to the 1930s
