Pompey's Pillar,Alexandria,Egypt. This is one of the largest monolithic columns ever erected, and was 26.85 metres tall and weighed 285 tons. It is called Pompey's Pillar because it was incorrectly dated to the time of Pompey, but in fact was built in 297 AD to mark the victory of the Roman emperor Diocletian over a revolt that took place here. It was made from red Aswan granite | |
