Binaural cochlear implant tuning
MODEL RELEASED. The recipient of the first binaural cochlear implant surgery carried out in the UK,has checks with an audiology scientist to assess and adjust the prosthetic device following the surgical procedure. Flexible arrays of receiver electrodes have been placed within both cochlea to stimulate the acoustic nerves. The external processor produces information transmitted to the arrays in the form of electrical signals at various frequencies and the brain can be trained to translate the signals into the perception of sounds. This electrode array needs adjustments and 'tuning' following the implant surgery,by audiological scientists,using software which provides information on the responses of the different frequency channels within the array.
