Pterodactylus (Pterodactylus antiquus),artwork. Pterodactylus lived during the Late Jurassic,150-148 million years ago. Discovered in 1784,it was the first pterosaur fossil to be named and identified. It was a small pterosaur, with a wingspan of around one metre. Recent discoveries have revealed that Pterodactylus had a large soft tissue head crest,a thick mane of fur along the back of its neck and large claws. It is shown here on the ground using its wings as a pair of front legs. It is thought that unlike birds, pterosaurs used all four limbs when moving on the ground | |
