Quartz and schist outcrops. This rock outcrop consists of alternating beds of quartzite (white) and schist (dark grey). Originally these were alternating sedimentary beds of sandstone and shale, buried deep underground by tectonic action. The high temperatures and pressures turned them into metamorphic rocks. Later tectonic forces then raised the rocks to where they were exposed by weathering and erosion. This outcrop is located in the Vesterolen region of Norway. The width of the area shown here is nearly one metre | |
