Jedediah Buxton (1705-72),English mathematical savant. Buxton was born on the state of Elmton in Derbyshire. He had little education despite being the son of a schoolmaster, indeed he could not write, yet he had an incredible talent for calculation. He once measured the area of the Elmton estate - about 4 square kilometres - simply by striding it out, then calculating the area in acres and the then-common units of roods, perches and even square inches. Assuming there were 48 hair's-breadths to an inch,he then calculated the area in square hair's-breadths. He once calculated the value of a farthing (pre-decimal coin with a value of 1/4 of a penny,1/960 of a pound) doubled 139 times - the number expressed to the nearest pound is thirty nine digits long. He was famous for being able to hold calculations in progress in his head, returning to them after a break of a month or more. This engraving first appeared in the Gentleman's Magazine in 1754 | |
