MODEL RELEASED. Proton beam therapy for treatment of a carcinoma within the eye. The patient's head is held by a semi-rigid mask to enable the precise targeting of the low-energy beam of protons from the brass collimator which is precisely machined to the profile of a specific patient's tumour. The dose of the proton beam is calculated to damage the DNA of the tumour. Cancerous cells, because of their high rate of division and their reduced ability to repair damaged DNA,are particularly vulnerable to this attack.Photographed at the Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology,Wirral,UK | |
