Motorway speed camera. SPECS (Speed Check Services) average speed camera (yellow) monitoring traffic on a motorway slip road. SPECS cameras are used to calculate the average speed of cars between two points, usually several kilometres apart. The cameras are able to recognise car number plates using an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system. The time taken to travel between two points is then used to calculate the average speed, and penalty notices issued if the speed limit has been broken. Photographed in the UK | |
