Portrait of Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768),the German archaeologist was one of the founders of scientific archaeology.He was the first person to provide reliable data on the discoveries at Pompeii,Italy. Pompeii which had been buried by a volcanic eruption in AD79,was rediscovered in 1748. Winckelmann began studying the excavated remains in 1758.
