Hurricane simulation. This screenshot is from the award-winning simulation 'Towers in the Tempest',produced by NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio in 2007. This view shows 'hot tower' updrafts (orange) and wind movements (arrows) in a supercomputer simulation. The 'hot towers' are massive updraft structures that form on the edge of the hurricane's eye. They reach heights of 18 kilometres and convey energy rapidly (red arrows) to higher levels within the hurricane. This rapid redistribution of energy helps to intensify the strength of the hurricane. This simulation was based on observations of Hurricane Bonnie using the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRRM) spacecraft
