Winged black ants. Swarm of winged black ants (Lasius niger) emerging from cracks in the ground. During the hot summer months winged reproductive males and large winged female queens take to the air in a mass mating flight. The males die after mating and the queens return to the ground, bite off their own wings and burrow underground to lay their eggs. The eggs hatch into non-reproductive females, who take care of the new colony. Photographed in July | |
