Shingles rash on the forehead with eye inflammation (at right) in a 72 year old male patient,affecting the first branch of the 5th cranial nerve. Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus (Herpes zoster) which attacks the nerve roots leading to small blisters on the skin supplied by the nerves. This painful rash lasts around two weeks.
