The rusting remains of two whaling ships,'Albatross' and 'Diaz' are seen beached by a jetty (upper centre),and many of the storage buildings are also rusting away. Grytviken was abandoned in 1965 because of declining stocks of whales. This whaling station is part of a restoration project aimed at preserving the cultural heritage of whalers and whaling
