Tycho supernova remnant (SN 1572),X-ray image. This expanding cloud of hot gas and dust formed following the death of a white dwarf star, which was observed by Tycho Brahe in 1572. When a large star dies, gas shells explode outwards and collide with interstellar material. The energy of the collision ionises the gas, causing it to glow. SN 1572 is located around 7,500 light years from Earth in the constellation Cassiopeia. Data from the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer on the Chandra X-ray Observatory | |
