Ritual figure. Wooden two-headed dog, known as a kozo, used in rituals by the people of the Congo Basin. This is a nkondi,a figure used for locating and punishing criminals. The two heads symbolise the two worlds that dogs are believed to live in,the village of the living and the forest of the dead. The figure itself is not believed to have any powers, but when a nganga (spiritual healer) attaches medicines to the figure it is empowered to work on behalf of the nganga. Each time a request for help is made an iron blade is driven into the Kozo | |
