Peter Mark Roget (1779-1869),English lexicographer. Roget was born at London and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. As a physician he wrote papers of physiology, including an early attempt to explain persistence of vision in providing an illusion of motion. He was the first Fullerian Professor of Physiology at the Royal Institution and helped found what would become the Royal Society of Medicine. However,a series of traumas in his personal life led him to retire from public duties in 1840. He started to work on a catalogue of words characterised by their meanings, published in 1852 and still in press today it is known as Roget's Thesaurus. He devoted the rest of his life to updating and editing this work | |
