Sugar maple tree (Acer saccharum) in autumn. Leaves change colour in autumn as the green pigment chlorophyll is broken down in preparation for the leaves being shed. This reveals other pigments usually masked by the chlorophyll. The sap of this tree is harvested to make maple syrup. Photographed in New Hampshire,USA | |
