Common Frogs (Rana temporaria) congregate in ponds in early spring (end of February in the UK) to mate. There is intense competition between the males to grab a female and to hold onto her during spawning. Shallow, still water is preferred and small ponds are often favoured,as in this garden pond in Dorset UK | |
