Interacting galaxies Arp 147. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of a pair of interacting galaxies known as Arp 147. The galaxy at left is relatively undisturbed apart from a smooth ring of starlight. It appears nearly on edge to our line of sight. The galaxy at right exhibits a clumpy, blue ring of intense star formation. Arp 147 is located in the constellation of Cetus, around 440 million light years from Earth. The area seen here is around 154,000 light years across. This image was obtained in October 2008 as part of a test of the HST's primary working camera, the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) | |
