Coloured illustration of the Neolithic Era,circa 7000BC to 2500BC when animals were domesticated, agriculture introduced, pottery and clothing made. Polished stone implements for grinding, cutting and chopping evolved. To the left a herdsman drives a pig a cow and a goat. In the centre a woman grinds wheat to make flour using a primitive mill consisting of a sloping stone with a trough and a smaller convex stone. The ears of wheat are place in the trough. The woman leans all her weight on the smaller stone and presses it forward. The ground wheat falls from the sloping stone on to a cloth placed to collect it. A dog is at her side. The children on her left are heating flat stones in the fire. When the stones are hot enough they are removed using damp sticks. The flour is mixed with water. This dough is placed between the hot stones to make round flat unleavened loaves | |
