The Reverend John Barlow (1799-1869),British clergyman and secretary of the Royal Institution. Barlow was the son of a vicar, and was educated at Trinity College Cambridge before taking holy orders. Although appointed a curate and later a rector,Berlow seems to have been more interested in the administration of scientific societies. His own scientific research concerned the early rudiments of psychology and treatment of the insane. He became a member of the Royal Institution in 1832,and Fellow of the Royal Society two years later. He served as secretary of the Zoological Society, before being elected Honorary Secretary of the RI. This portrait in oils by Henry William Pickersgill hangs at the Royal Institution in London | |
