William Henry Fitton (1780-1861) Irish geologist. Fitton was born and educated at Dublin. While at Trinity College,he spent his leisure time studying fossils. His formal studies in medicine took him to Edinburgh and London,and he practiced medicine from 1812. In 1820 he married a rich woman and could devote his time to geology. He described the fine structure sandstones found beneath the surface chalks of south-east England,identifying their strata and their relationships.
