Sir William Bowman,1st Baronet (1816-1892),English surgeon and histologist. Bowman was born in Cheshire,and after school was apprenticed to a surgeon in Birmingham. He completed his training in surgery in London. Bowman is famous for using microscopes to study human organs,his early paper on striated muscle earning him a fellowship of the Royal Society. From 1844 he practiced as an opthalmologist,founding what was to become the Royal College of Opthalmologists. In the 1850s he published extensive works on the microscopic anatomy of the body,revolutionising the science. He was created a baronet in 1884 | |
