Jupiter. Hubble Space Telescope image of Jupiter, the fifth planet from the Sun. Jupiter is a gas giant and, with a diameter eleven times that of the Earth,is the largest planet in the solar system. Powerful jet streams create bands of coloured clouds in the planet's atmosphere, which consists mainly of hydrogen and helium with some trace gases that cause the colours. The bands are dotted with spots marking atmospheric disturbances; which can persist for many years. The largest such spot is the Great Red Spot (centre) | |
