First transatlantic flight,May 1919. This first transatlantic flight was carried out by a Curtiss NC flying boat (called the NC-4) from the USA to Europe. Stops were made for fuel and repairs on Atlantic islands, and the aircraft followed a chain of 40 US warships to guide it along its route and provide assistance if needed. Two other flying boats flying the same route at the same time failed to complete the journey. The route was New York,USA (8 May),Newfoundland (16 May),the Azores (17-27 May,including repairs) and Lisbon,Portugal (27 May). The aircraft then flew to Plymouth,England, arriving on 31 May 1919 | |
