Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881),Scottish writer,essayist,historian,teacher and social commentator. Carlyle was raised as a strict Calvinist. He married Jane Baillie Welsh in 1826 and subsequently moved to London where he became a controversial social commentator and a leading figure in Victorian society.
