James South (1785-1867),British astronomer. South was born in london,the son of a pharmacist. His education was in medicine,he was a member of the College of Surgeons,but during his studies he had become interested in astronomy. In 1816 he married an heiress,gave up medicine and built an observatory at his home. In conjunction with John Herschel,he repeated many of the observations on double stars made by William Herschel,updating a catalogue of 380 stars and measuring a further 458. South helped to found the Astronomical Society of London,and was instrumental in obtaining the Royal Charter in 1831 | |
