Edwin Lankester (1814-1874),English surgeon and naturalist. Lankester was born in Suffolk,and was apprenticed to a surgeon. He first studied medicine at London,but completed his degree in Germany. Back in London he combined his medical practice with researches in biology. He studied sulphur bacteria and drinking water through the microscope,and published several important works. He chaired the committee that revealed the cause of the cholera outbreaks in London,discovered by Snow to be contaminated water from a public pump.
