Yew tree root. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a root of a yew tree,(Taxus baccata). Most of the outer cortex (dark blue) has broken off due to the formation of a phellogen layer (dark blue files of cells),producing outer protective cork. The inner cortex is composed of large parenchyma cells full of large starch grains (multicoloured),and the smaller inner sieve cells of the phloem.
