Black-crowned night heron. Young black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) in a tree. These birds are found throughout a large part of the world,except in the coldest regions and Australasia. Young birds are brown,flecked with white and grey whereas adult birds are white or grey with a black crown and back. The young become independent about 7 weeks after hatching.
