Well crank and pulley system,16th century artwork. The man at right is operating the lever that moves the looped chain carrying buckets down the shaft to collect water. The woman is taking the full buckets off the chain as they arrive at the surface. This is an engraving from a book by the French inventor and mathematician Jacques Besson (circa 1540-1573). The book was titled Theatre des instrumens mathematiques et mechaniques (Theatre of mathematical and mechanical instruments). This artwork is from an edition published in Lyon in 1596
