Tristao da Cunha (circa 1460 to circa 1540),Portuguese explorer and admiral,with an elephant in the background. From 1506,his fleet of 15 ships explored the southern Atlantic,the east coast of Africa and parts of India. The islands he discovered in the southern Atlantic are named Tristan da Cunha in his honour.
