Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527),Italian philosopher. Machiavelli's career was as a civil servant for the Republic of Florence. It was his political treatises on his approach to power,The Prince and Discourses on Livy, both published after his death, that led to the term Machiavellianism. This term refers to cunning and deceit being used to maintain power. Despite this,Machiavelli is considered one of the founders of modern political science.
