Explosion, coloured shadowgraph. Shadowgraphy is a type of flow visualisation, similar to but simpler than schlieren photography. Disturbances in an air flow can be seen by the shadows they cast. Here,a small explosion has been imaged about one millisecond after the explosion began. The explosive charge was one gram of triacetone triperoxide (TATP) in a small cardboard cylinder, suspended on a string. The image was exposed for 1 microsecond, and has captured the supersonic motion of the spherical blast wave and the fragments of the cardboard cylinder | |
