Flightless cormorant male and female
Flightless cormorant (Nannopterum harrisi) male (right) that has brought a seaweed offering to a female. This seabird is endemic to the Galapagos Islands,and is the only species of cormorant that has lost the ability to fly. It evolved in isolation on islands with no predators,and its wings were lost as it adapted to diving from the coastlines to catch fish. During breeding,a seaweed nest is built,decorated with gifts of flotsam that are given to the female by the male. Photographed on Fernandina Island,Galapagos Islands
